NEW! 9th Grade Niners: Exploring the Jewish Bay Area

A new and exciting immersive opportunity for ninth graders to explore the Jewish community here in the San Francisco Bay Area - its fascinating history and its dynamic present – all with an eye to identity exploration during these formative years.

The students will meet for lunch at local Jewish restaurants as they learn about the extensive and varied history of the California Jewish community. They’ll eat deli in Berkeley and explore Jewish organizations dedicated to Jewish environmental consciousness. They’ll eat in San Francisco’s Japantown as they discover the connections between the twin experiences of Japanese American internment during WWII and the Holocaust, after which they’ll visit a Reform synagogue with deep history in the San Francisco Jewish community. They’ll also spend a Shabbat evening at Congregation Sha’ar Zahav, San Francisco’s only LGBTQIA+ synagogue.

All Niners sessions are on Sundays beginning at 12:30 pm except for one Friday night service in San Francisco. However, each session will take place in a different location in the Bay Area. A schedule will be sent home at the start of the year so families can mark their calendars accordingly, and carpooling will be encouraged.

Note: Students in the Niners program are also encouraged to sign up for the Madrichim program, even if they were not in the MIT program.

Sunday afternoons, dates & times TBA.

Tuition: $475

Confirmation (10th Grade)

Confirmation is a special year dedicated to our 10th graders where students dive deeply into big questions that Jews ask about Jewish life. For example, “What is the purpose of religion anyway?” “What is the Jewish view on life after death?” “What does Judaism have to say about Reproductive Justice?” Students conclude the year with an affirmation of their Jewish identities in a communal Shabbat Service experience on May 14, 2027.

In addition, the Confirmation families are invited to join each month during the Community Shabbat dinners that precede each month’s musical Hallelu Shabbat services. They will have their own tables so they can socialize together, and the cost of these dinners for the entire family are already included in the tuition fee..

Frequency: 1/month plus Community Shabbat Dinner sessions

Day/Time:  Wednesday 6-8:00 pm

Sessions: Session dates: 10/14, 11/18, 12/9, 1/13, 3/10, 4/7, 5/5, plus the Concluding Shabbat on 5/14.

NEW! 11th & 12th Grade Tikkun Teen Fellowship: Jewish American Story

This year’s Tikkun Teen Fellowship will focus on the Jewish American Story and culminate in a weekend trip to New York City* (March 11-14, 2027), all serving to help students explore their Jewish self as they move towards adulthood. Students will explore the history of Jewish immigration to the United States, from the first Sephardim who arrived in the late 1500s through the 1700s, to the German Jewish immigration of the mid-1800s, to the millions of Eastern European Jews who arrived between the 1880s and the early 1920s, and on through the present, all creating the diverse Jewish community of today. During the NYC trip, students will visit cultural touchstones such as Ellis Island and the Lower East Side; explore museums like the Tenement Museum; discover common ground and see what sets us apart from the Ultra-Orthodox community; celebrate Shabbat at Temple Emanu-El of New York; and, of course, see Times Square and more.

We look forward to the 11th/12th grade program alternating years between the Jewish American Story and Jewish Justice. The following year (2027-2028), Tikkun Teen Fellowship will learn about the Jewish role in justice movements of the past and present, and how to take action themselves in pursuit of tikkun olam, repairing the world. They will also have the option to attend the L’Taken weekend in DC in January or February 2028, where they will join hundreds of Jewish teens from across the country to advocate for social justice causes.
